Today continued to be an exciting day. A few of us
ventured down to the beach. There the generational differences were very
apparent. Apparently, the beach is mostly a male activity. However, the women
that were there were very diverse. It seems to be acceptable if girls under the
age of about 13 can go in the water in regular bathing suits. Then there was a
mix of people from sixteen to probably 29ish that were in bathing suits OR full
dress in the water, headdress and all. Any women older than that tended weren’t
there or were in full dress and not in the water at all. Rabat is such a
diverse group of traditional and modern, it’s interesting to see the
differences and combinations.
After dinner we went adventured into the Medina and found
the main food market and we tried a cactus fruit. There were tons of fabric
stores and jewelry stores. The Medina is a maze of narrow streets spanning
several blogs with old traditional homes. It is a mix of families and businesses.
Cars and motorcycles try to squeeze between the vendors selling bread, fruits
and snails. Snails and the broth seem to be a really popular snack. I’m not
sure if I’ll try boiled snails……
Tomorrow we’re doing a drop off where they stick us
someplace and we wander for a couple hours. I’m looking forward to finding new
places… :)
